Dean and Director of Libraries

Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean and Director of Libraries.

The Dean and Director of Libraries, who reports to the Provost, is responsible for the Library and Information Center, which serves the Georgia Tech community and provides significant service to metropolitan Atlanta’s technology-based industries.

The Library and Information Center, a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and winner of the 2007 ACRL Excellence in Libraries Award, consists of the main library and the architecture library with a collection of over 2.4 million volumes focused primarily on science and technology. In FY07 the library had a budget of about $12.5 million and a staff of over 120 FTE. The Library is aggressively moving to desktop delivery of resources and currently provides access to over 240 online databases, 39,000 e-journals and 29,000 e-books. The Library is also actively involved in digital preservation initiatives, including SMARTech, an institutional repository that already contains over 10,000 items and is growing at a rate of about 250 items per month.

Over the past five years, collaborative efforts of library staff, students, faculty, and campus support units have resulted in the design and implementation of a number of user-centered library resources and facilities, including two highly-acclaimed Information Commons areas. These innovations will be integrated and expanded into an Undergraduate Learning Center, which is entering the schematic design phase.

Georgia Tech seeks an individual with national stature in the research library community and demonstrated success in research library management. The successful applicant must:

  • Have a vision for the future of the academic research library that best serves Georgia Tech’s mission;
  • Have the necessary background, strategic vision and strong desire to lead Georgia Tech in effectively applying information technologies to best meet the needs of all library users;
  • Understand the academic environment and the role of the library in support of all forms of scholarship – learning, teaching, and research;
  • Communicate effectively and exhibit a collaborative leadership style;
  • Be entrepreneurial in seeking development opportunities as a means of increasing resources; and
  • Recruit and maintain an outstanding and diverse staff.

Georgia Tech is a Carnegie RU/VU institution with over 18,000 students and over 2200 academic and research faculty members located on its main campus in Atlanta and satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia and Lorraine, France.
