History of the Georgia Tech Committee on Educational Objectives and Methods

The Georgia Institute of Technology Committee on Educational Objectives and Methods was formed in 1950 by President Blake Van Leer. Charged with examining the objectives, procedures, practices, and methods of education at Georgia Tech, the steering committee was originally made up of eight members, with William M. Spicer, professor of chemistry, as its chairman. In the course of its operation, the committee added a ninth member and delegated some of its work to subcommittees on curriculum comparisons, entrance requirements, examinations, and core curriculum. The committee's final report, which included numerous recommendations in addition to the final reports of each subcommittee, was completed in May 1954 and printed in September of that year. The recommendations were considered and adopted by the Academic Senate of Georgia Tech in March 1955.
