Biography of Walter "Doc" Boyd

Walter "Doc" Boyd was a native of Savannah, Georgia. He attended school in Maryland before coming to Georgia Tech in 1908 as a sub-apprentice. While Boyd was at Tech, he was active in sports as well as in several organizations. He played class football from 1911-1913, was captain in 1912, and he played class baseball in 1911 and 1912. In addition, he was on the Honor Court from 1911-1913, and he was secretary and treasurer of his class in 1908-1910. While at Tech, Boyd also participated as a member of the Technique staff, Dramatech, Koseme, Bulldogs, and the Chi Phi fraternity.

In 1968, Boyd began compiling information concerning the many groups that he was involved in and that began during his time at Georgia Tech. He died on October 25, 1970.

Description

Walter Boyd compiled a great deal of his research into a manuscript describing the beginnings of Dramatech, the first freshman football team, the ANAKS, and the beginnings of the Student Council, Honor Court, the Technique, and the Panhellenic Council. He also describes the Koseme and the Bulldog organizations, and the later consolidation of the two organizations. This manuscript is included in this collection.

The correspondence contains letters between Boyd and Roane Beard, Executive Secretary of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association during the late 1960s, as well as letters from Boyd to Dorothy Crosland and other librarians at Georgia Tech during this period.
