Abstract:J. Walter Estes was a graduate of Georgia Tech in 1904. This collection consists of correspondence and a travel itinerary for a group of Georgians on an industrial tour of northern cities.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Walter Estes was born in 1882 in Rex, Georgia. As a graduate of Georgia Tech's Class of 1904, he earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Fraternity. With his father, Estes formed the Estes Manufacturing Company in 1907, producing school desks and grain cradles. He later became President of the Rex Chair Company.

Estes served in the Georgia State Senate for two terms, 1938-1940 and 1943-44. He was also the mayor of Rex. Estes was in the banking industry for over 30 years, serving as the President of the Bank of Rex. He married Winnie Davis Brittain in 1910 and had three daughters. Estes died in 1985 at the age of 102.


Scope and Content Note

The J. Walter Estes Papers contain information and an itinerary on the Greater Georgia Tech Industrial Tour. This tour involved many professionals from businesses and technical schools, physicians and lawyers throughout the state of Georgia. The week-long event, from November 18 through 25, 1920, stopped at several northern industrial cities, such as Boston, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh.

The folder contains correspondence, a program, and a statement listing the members of the tour.
