Abstract:During the 140th Commencement Exercises at the University of Georgia, Judge Price Gilbert presented the Gilbert Memorial Infirmary to faculty and students. This collection contains Judge Gilbert's remarks on the occasion.

Biographical/Historical Note

Stirling Price Gilbert was born on January 31, 1862 in Stewart County, Georgia. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1883 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and in 1885, he graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Laws degree. After his admission to the bar in 1885, Gilbert returned to Georgia, practicing in Atlanta and Columbus. In 1916, Gilbert became a member of the Supreme Court of Georgia, where he remained for over twenty-five years.

In addition to his philanthropy to the University of Georgia, Gilbert donated money that permitted the construction of a much-needed new library on the Georgia Tech campus. Named in his honor, the Price Gilbert Memorial Library opened in 1953. A portrait of Price Gilbert hangs near the rotunda of the library.

Gilbert married Mary Howard on December 12, 1895 in Columbus, Georgia. The couple had two sons: Stirling Price Gilbert, Jr. and Francis Howard Gilbert. Judge Gilbert died on August 28, 1951.


Scope and Content Note

The Judge S. Price Gilbert, Sr. Speech, entitled Remarks of Judge Price Gilbert Presenting "Gilbert Memorial Infirmary," is a single speech given on June 4, 1943, during the 140th Commencement Exercises at the University of Georgia. Gilbert dedicates the infirmary to his late son, Francis Howard Gilbert, and father, Jasper Newton Gilbert, M.D.
