Abstract:During the 1938-1939 academic year, a proposal was made to establish a preliminary flight training program at Georgia Tech's Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics, which was sponsored by the federal government. These records consist of several letters and memoranda dealing with the flight training program.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics was established on March 30, 1930, when Georgia Tech received a $300,000 grant from the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the promotion of aeronautics. This was the last and second largest grant made to seven institutions across the United States for establishment of centers for aeronautical research and instruction. Later in Georgia Tech history, the School of Aeronautics was renamed the School of Aerospace Engineering.


Scope and Content Note

These records contain items relating to Georgia Tech's flight training program for students, including a memorandum from Dr. Marion Brittain to the Georgia Tech faculty advisory committee, discussing the importance of student participation. There are also several letters dealing with the Civil Aeronautics Authority in Washington, D. C.
