Abstract:Four folders of notes and notebooks of Arnold G. Wurz, including two notebooks from the Georgia Tech College Inn composed of civil engineering calculations, diagrams, and topic descriptions.

Biographical/Historical Note

Arnold George Wurz was born on April 21, 1907 in Pattersonville, New York. He moved to Greenwood, Mississippi as a child after his father died in an accident. In 1929, Wurz graduated from The Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi, now known as Mississippi State University, with a degree in engineering. He becme a structural engineer. In 1938 and 1939, Wurz designed Auburn Stadium, the concrete stadium used for the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) Tigers' home football games until 1949. During World War II, Wurz served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian engineer. He moved to Atlanta after the war, and it is there that he came into contact with the Georgia Institute of Technology. He helped design the Price Gilbert Memorial Library, as well as the Architecture (now Architecture East) Building, at Georgia Tech in the early 1950s. Wurz died on August 17, 1989, at the age of 82, after having retired from the structural engineering profession in 1975.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains four civil engineering notebooks and a large set of notes on numerous topics in civil and structural engineering. One notebook dates from 1931, while the others are undated. Some of the topics covered are the Hardy Cross Method of Analysis of Continuous Frames, properties of the parabola, and properties of support columns. Many of the notebook pages are filled with diagrams and calculations.
