Biographical/Historical Note

According to the SEASECS website, the Southeastern American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies is "an interdisciplinary society promoting the interchange of ideas and information on the culture, history, literature, philosophy, politics, music, economics, architecture, art, medicine, and science of the eighteenth-century world." Membership is open to anyone interested in the eighteenth century, but membership is generally drawn from the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

An affiliate of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the regional organization was founded as the result of an organizational meeting in November 1973. The first Annual Meeting of SEASECS was held at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in April 1975. The Society meets annually in early spring, normally in March, at a location in one of the southeastern states. The Executive Board consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Journal Editor, Archivist/Historian, Immediate Past President, and Graduate Student Member (non-voting). Six Members At Large serving staggered three-year terms also serve on the Board. Standing committees include the Graduate Student Prize Committee and the Percy Adams Prize Committee, which are in charge of selecting the winners of each of these awards, and the Membership Committee.

The Society publishes a scholarly journal, XVIII: New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century, as well as a newsletter, The SEASECS Gazette.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains four series, the contents of which overlap somewhat.

Several of the constitutions developed by SEASECS are found in Series 1, beginning with the organization's first constitution, which was approved in November 1973. Further drafts and approved constitutions can also be found in Series 2, Subseries 2.

Series 2, Executive Board Records, consists of the records of the SEASECS Board. The series is subdivided into three subseries. The first of these contains a list of officers and Board members from 1973 to 1988. Further lists of officers and Board members may also be found in Series 2, Subseries 2, Administrative Records. The records in Series 2, Subseries 2 contain the most complete documentation of the SEASECS Board activities, particularly those of the first twenty years of the organization. Correspondence, especially regarding the formation of SEASECS; abstracts, drafts, and copies of meeting programs; Board meeting agendas and minutes; membership lists; treasurer's and other officers' reports; calls for papers; information on prize committees; and lists of Board members are among the documents found in this subseries. The subseries is largely drawn from notebooks, which were organized chronologically. This organization has been retained. Series 2, Subseries 3 contains three inventories created by the SEASECS archivist/historian.

Series 3, Committee Records, is currently a small series. Series 3, Subseries 1 consists of the Membership Committee records, including membership lists (see also Subseries 2) as well as some information on registrations for Annual Meetings. Subseries 2 of this series contains records relating to the annual article prize awarded by the Percy Adams Article Prize Committee. No records pertaining to the Graduate Student Prize Committee are currently available.

Series 4, Printed Material, is made up mainly of copies of the society's newsletter, now known as The SEASECS Gazette, and its journal, XVIII: New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century. Also in this series are a few membership and Annual Meeting brochures.

At the time of writing (December 2011), the collection is strongest in documentation of the activities of SEASECS for the first twenty-five years of its existence. The collection is expected to expand to include more recent materials in the near future.
