Biographical/Historical Note

Earl Wendell Purser was born on August 4, 1905 in Stamps, Lafayette County, Arkansas, to Elijah M. and Maud Symmonds Purser, one of two children. He enrolled in the Georgia School (now Institute) of Technology in 1923 or 1924, but there is no evidence to prove that he graduated. While a freshman at Georgia Tech, Purser lived in the Swann Dormitory and attended many, if not all, of the athletic events competed in by the Georgia Tech sports teams.

In 1928, Purser married Mary Werdna Farrar of nearby Lewisville, Arkansas, and they had one child, Patricia, in 1929. The 1930 U.S. Census shows that the Purser family was living in Houston, Texas, at the time, but they later moved back to Lewisville, Arkansas.

Mary Purser died on March 9, 1995, at the age of 87. Eight years later, Earl Purser died on April 17, 2003 at age 97, in Texarkana, Texas. Purser was buried at the Wilson Cemetery in Lewisville.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains Earl Purser's tuition and housing receipts, a library card, and an athletic ticket book. The ticket book allowed Purser to attend all home football and basketball games, and it served as a proof of membership in the campus YMCA.
