Biographical/Historical Note

Edwin Rembert "Rem" DuBose (1922-2006) was a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology and remained actively involved with the school as an alumnus for his entire life.

DuBose was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 3, 1922. His mother was Louise Moultrie DuBose, and his father was James Rembert DuBose. DuBose lived with his parents and younger brother, Lige Moultrie DuBose, in Elyria, Ohio, until his parents were divorced. His mother then moved his brother and him to Rome, Georgia, where DuBose attended The Darlington School for Boys. He graduated in 1940.

In the fall of 1940, DuBose entered Georgia Tech where his father had received a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1912. While at Tech, DuBose was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity and president of the ASME Student Chapter. DuBose was in the ROTC program, and he joined the Armed Services Training Program (ATSP) in 1941. He was sent to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and then to the Citadel in South Carolina. DuBose returned to Georgia Tech, but was soon sent back to Aberdeen for Officer Candidate School and was assigned to the ordnance school there. DuBose was discharged in 1946 as an Army Captain.

Dubose married Alta Jeane White on December 16, 1944, and after DuBose was discharged from the military, they moved back to Atlanta. DuBose returned to Georgia Tech and completed his Mechanical Engineering degree in March of 1948.

DuBose began working at his father-in-law's company, White Electrical Construction Company, in Columbus, Georgia. After four years, he was transferred to offices in Atlanta. He worked his way up in the company and became president in 1957 (retiring in 1984) and chairman of the board in 1961. He remained chairman emeritus until 2003. He worked at the company for 55 years.

During his career, DuBose was involved in his community and served as President of the Georgia Architects and Engineers Society, President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Electrical Contractors Association, President of the Federated Electrical Contractors Association, and President of the Midtown Rotary Club.

DuBose was an active Georgia Tech alumnus. He served 8 years as a Trustee of its Alumni Association, chairman of the 34th Roll Call, and chairman of the Thousand Club Committee. He served as President of the Alumni Association in 1984-85 and served as treasurer of the Executive Board. He was a member of the Georgia Tech Foundation and was chairman of its Audit Committee. He received the Joseph Pettit Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1990, and he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Engineering in 1994.
