Abstract:This collection consists of a letter written in 1988 from Frederic Coleman Channell, Jr., one of Frank Waddey's football teammates at Tech, to Waddey, a copy of the "Georgia Tech's Golden Tornado: Champions 1928" tribute book, and a newspaper article about the 1929 Rose Bowl game.

Biographical/Historical Note

Frank O. (Frank Orum) Waddey was born in Tennessee in August 1905. He attended the Georgia School of Technology, graduating with a degree in General Science in 1929. While he was at Tech, he was active in academics, sports, and school leadership: He served as Vice-President of the Student Council and President of the Senior Class in his senior year, he was on the Honor Roll for his first three years, and he was a member of Anak, Koseme, the Cotillion Club, and the Delta Sigma Phi social fraternity. He also played basketball during his first year, and starred on both the baseball and football teams while at Tech. He played end on the 1928 football team, which had a very successful undefeated season, culminating in a victory at the 1929 Rose Bowl.

After leaving Georgia Tech, Waddey became a professional baseball player for a few years. By 1930, he had married Alberta B. Gilbertson, and they were living in Memphis with her parents. Waddey also served for a time as a linesman officiating at football games in the southeast. He died on 21 October 1990 in Tennessee.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a letter written in 1988 from Frederic Coleman Channell, Jr., one of Frank Waddey's football teammates at Tech, to Waddey. The letter includes biographical information on Channell as well as some information on some of the other men who played football at Tech with Channell and Waddey. The collection includes a copy of the Golden Tornado tribute book created about the 1928 Tech football team prior to the Rose Bowl game. The collection also contains a newspaper article about the 1929 Rose Bowl game.
