Biographical/Historical Note

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team, which was known as the Golden Tornado, completed a very successful undefeated season in 1928 by beating the University of Georgia by a score of 20 to 6. That season, Tech's team featured three All-Americans: Peter Pund, Warner Mizell, and Frank Speer. After winning the 1928 Southern Conference championship, the Tech team was invited to play in the 1929 Rose Bowl. At the Rose Bowl, Tech won its first football national championship by defeating the University of California by a score of 8 to 7. The game is known for the wrong-way run by California's Roy Riegels.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a single hand-drawn poster-size diagram of the play-by-play details of the Rose Bowl of 1929, played between the Golden Tornado (the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets) and the Golden Bear (the University of California football team). The events of each quarter are diagrammed, with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets' plays in red and the University of California's in blue. On the upper left of the diagram is a note from George Rentz giving the document to his friend "Skeeter," a member of the Tech class of 1932.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

The origin of this document is unknown, but it may have been created by a George Rentz, whose connection to Georgia Tech is unknown. The note on the diagram indicates that Rentz gave it to his friend "Skeeter" (whose surname is illegible on the document), who was a member of the class of 1932. The diagram ended up in the hands of Bobby Dodd, who served as an assistant football coach under William A. Alexander. Alexander coached the 1928 Tech football team, the victor in the 1929 Rose Bowl. Dodd eventually gave the poster to Tommy Plaxico, a track star at Tech in the 1940s who served as the golf coach at Tech from 1956 to 1982. Plaxico gave the poster to August W. Giebelhaus while Giebelhaus was preparing Engineering the New South for publication. Giebelhaus donated the diagram to the Archives in 1987.
