Abstract:This collection contains materials accumulated during William F. Leslie's career at Georgia Tech, including humorous newspaper articles, particularly on the rivalry between Tech and the University of Georgia; programs for several Georgia Tech events; correspondence regarding Tech registration and admission; and other administrative documents.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Franklin Leslie (b. 1934) served in the administration of the Georgia Institute of Technology for almost 30 years. He held the position of Associate Registrar from 1973 to 1995.

William F. Leslie was born on 22 April 1934 and grew up in Cedartown, Georgia. He attended Georgia Tech, earning a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering in 1957. Leslie returned to Tech by the 1963-1964 school year, serving as Assistant Director of the Cooperative Division for several years before becoming Assistant Registrar in 1967. He was appointed the Director of Registration and Records in 1968 and served in the position until 1970. He also earned a Master's degree in Industrial Management in 1970. In June of that year, Leslie left Tech to become the Registrar at Emory University, but he returned to Tech by 1973 to serve as Associate Registrar. He continued in that position for more than 20 years, leaving for the final time in 1995.

Scope and Content Note

Numerous newspapers and newspaper articles form part of this collection, all primarily from the 1970s through the 1990s, and mainly of a humorous nature. An important subset of these articles is a number of humor articles pertaining to the rivalry between Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia; another subset is the April Fool's issues of the Technique. Programs for several special events at Tech are also included in the collection, notably the funeral programs for Bobby Dodd and Joseph Pettit, event programs for the inauguration of President G. Wayne Clough, the program for the inauguration of Blake Van Leer, and the 1970 commencement program. Anniversary publications (for the 75th and 100th anniversary) of the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine are also part of the collection. Additionally, the collection contains Georgia Tech administrative information such as Executive Committee correspondence, dating from the mid 1940s; correspondence with students regarding registration and admission; and correspondence with other universities. (Some of these documents are restricted.) Correspondence about the student publication The Yellow Jacket is also included.
