Biographical/Historical Note

The first major celebration of an anniversary at Georgia Tech was the twenty-fifth anniversary in 1913. The celebration surrounded the commencement in June of that year, and consisted of several events including a luncheon, a freshman oratorical contest, a debate, and several addresses. The Quarter-Centennial Address was given by William Jennings Bryan, then Secretary of State of the United States.

The fiftieth anniversary celebrations took place on October 7 and 8, 1938. On October 7, events consisted of a golf match, a tennis match, a guided tour of Atlanta, a "show of scientific magic," a reception, tea dance, President's dinner, and dance. The commemoration exercises, which included short speeches by the governor, E. D. Rivers, and the chancellor, S. V. Sanford, as well as the President of SUNY, Frank Pierrepont Graves, took place in the morning. A luncheon, football game, fraternity open house, dance, and Phi Beta Kappa dinner followed in the afternoon and evening.

The seventy-fifth anniversary celebration, in 1963, included a lecture series and other celebrations. The publication of Dress Her in White and Gold, by Robert B. Wallace, Jr. occurred at the time of this anniversary.

Georgia Tech celebrated its centennial in 1985, the anniversary of the legislation in the Georgia congress that marked the founding of the school. Tech celebrated its centennial with a capital campaign, an exhibition entitled "China: 7,000 Years of Discovery," publications (including Images and Memories and Engineering the New South), and several other events.
