According to the Georgia Tech Athletic Association website, the primary purpose of the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, Inc. is "to raise the money necessary to pay for Georgia Tech's student-athletes' scholarships. The goal at A-T is to raise enough money in unrestricted annual giving to cover the cost of the number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA." The organization was initially called the Alexander-Tharpe Scholarship Fund, with the name changed to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, Inc. in 1981.
