Biographical/Historical Note

Georgia Tech first fielded a golf team in 1919, but it was not until 1931 that the team had its first coach, H. E. Dennison, a professor of economics and social science who remained as golf coach until 1955. Another long-term coach, Tommy Plaxico, succeeded Dennison in 1956, guiding the team as the sport expanded from playing dual matches to stroke-play tournaments. After Plaxico's retirement in 1982, Puggy Blackmon, a golf professional and teacher, took over. Blackmon is credited with moving the team to a perennial top-25 program. The Jackets won five ACC titles, 33 tournaments, and competed in 11 NCAA championships during his time as coach.

After Blackmon's departure after the 1995 season, Bruce Heppler, then an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, was hired as head coach of the golf team. As of 2010, Heppler had led the team to six NCAA championship tournaments, seven ACC championships, and three NCAA East Regional championships. Golf Digest rated Tech's golf team the best in the nation in 2005 and second in 2006.

Several Tech golf players have gone on to notable careers in the sport, including Bobby Jones, Watts Gunn (National Collegiate Champion in 1927), Charlie Yates (National Collegiate Champion in 1934), David Duval (1990-1993), Matt Kuchar (1997-2001), and many others.

Scope and Content Note

Each of these annual publications contains photos and profiles of the current team and coaches; reviews of the previous season and outlooks for the upcoming season; a section on golf history and statistics; fundraising; schedules for the coming season; information on facilities; media information; and background on Georgia Tech itself. Most of the publications are intended as media guides.

Within the date range of this collection, several volumes are missing, including 1990, 1992, 1996 through 1998, 2001, and 2004.
