Biographical/Historical Note

Introduced at Tech in 1904, track has had a long history at Georgia Tech. Football coach John Heisman led the team from 1904 to 1908. Charles Thomas (1908-1917) and football coach William A. Alexander (1918-1923) succeeded Heisman, leading the team to first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1912 and Georgia State and Southeastern Amateur Athletic Union Championships in 1922.

Since 1924, apart from a brief period in the late 1920s and early 1930s, four long-term coaches have taken the men's team to many successes: George C. Griffin (1924-1926 and 1933-1943), Norris Dean (1944-1964), Buddy Fowlkes (1965-1992), and Grover Hinsdale (1993- ). Harold Barron coached the team from 1927 to 1930, and Olympic gold medalist and former Tech star Ed Hamm took over during 1931-1932. At the time of writing (February 2012), Hinsdale has served men's track and field as head coach for 19 years. During his tenure, the team perennially has finishes in the top 10 at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships and has sent several athletes to the Olympics, including gold medalists Derrick Adkins, Derek Mills, and Angelo Taylor.

Georgia Tech first fielded a women's track and field team in 1986, with Dee Todd, who also coached women's cross country, as head coach. After Todd's departure in 1988, Buddy Fowlkes, the men's coach, took over the women's team as well, serving until 1992. Wendy Truvillion, who had served as assistant coach, led the team from 1993 to 1995. As of this writing (February 2012), Alan Drosky, who also coaches the men's and women's cross country teams, has been head coach of the women's team since the 1995-1996 season. He has led the women to several top-three finishes in the ACC and top-25 finishes in the NCCA. In 2002, the women's team won the ACC track and field championship.

Prior to 1982, the men's team competed in an outdoor season that lasted from March until June, but by 1983 an indoor season running from December or January to March was added to the schedule. The men's and women's team schedules now include indoor and outdoor seasons, typically lasting from January through June.

Scope and Content Note

Generally intended as media guides and/or recruiting brochures, these annual publications for the men's and women's track and field team provide schedules for the upcoming season; rosters; team photographs; profiles of coaches and team members; and a season preview. Also included are lists of records and results, and descriptions of the Tech facilities. The first series, cataloged as GV1060 .G62 G46x, includes men's guides from 1977 through 1993 and women's guides from 1986 to 1993. Series 2, cataloged as GV1060 .G46 G462x, includes guides for the men's team from 1995; Series 3, cataloged as GV1060 .G46 G472x, contains guides for the women's team starting in 1995.

In the early years of the women's track and field team, separate guides for the men's and women's team were published. By 1990, however, one guide was published annually that covered both the men's and women's team. This practice continued until about 1995, when separate guides for each team started being published again.

Within the date range of this collection, guides are missing for 1978-1979, 1982, 1987-1989, 1994, 1996, and 1998 (men's team); and 1989, 1994, 1996, and 1998 (women's team).
