Biographical/Historical Note

The 2011 Georgia Tech Factbook states that the Georgia Tech Athletic Association is "a non-profit organization responsible for maintaining the intercollegiate athletic program at Tech. The Athletic Association is overseen by the Georgia Tech Athletic Board, chaired by the President of the Institute and composed of nine faculty members, three alumni members, and three student members."

The Athletic Association was started in January of 1901 to raise money for the university’s fledgling sports program. Its first goal was to reinstate the Georgia Tech football team, which had been disbanded the previous year after a winless 1900 season. When the group was incorporated in 1902, its first fundraising activity was to sell 400 shares of five dollar stock.

At the time of writing (March 2012), the Director of Athletics, Dan Radakovich, reports directly to the President and the GTAA Board. Under the direction of the Director are several branches, including Development (the Alexander-Tharpe fund), Chief Financial Officer, Public Relations, Student Services, and Administrative Services. Two senior admistrators, the head coaches of football and basketball, and other departments including those in charge of equipment, facilities, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning also report to the Director.
