Biographical/Historical Note

The Georgia Tech Foundation came into existence in 1932. As the result of a petition for a charter by several prominent alumni, including Y. Frank Freeman ('10), William H. Glenn ('10), Robert Gregg ('05), and Frank Neely ('04), the Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in January 1932. Originally formed to sell insurance policies to alumni, in 1950 the organization's charter and bylaws were changed, and in 1954, the organization became known as the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc.

According to the Foundation’s website, the mission of the Georgia Tech Foundation is to “foster and manage gifts given in support of academic excellence in the spirit and traditions of the Georgia Institute of Technology.” As of this writing (October 2012), the organization is made up of staff and a Board of Trustees. The staff is divided into four units: Accounting, Administration, Information Services, and Investments. According to the bylaws of the Foundation, the Board of Trustees consists of no fewer than 15 or more than 45 elected trustees, four Board Officers, five ex-officio voting trustees, and three ex-officio non-voting trustees. The ex-officio voting and non-voting trustees are drawn from the members of the administration of Georgia Tech. The elected trustees, who must be alumni or alumnae of Georgia Tech, each serve for a period of four years. Most are prominent active or retired businessmen and -women, architects, engineers, and other professionals, mostly centered in Georgia. The Board holds quarterly meetings. The bylaws of the Board of Trustees were adopted in December 1999, with amendments in June 2001, June 2004, March 2006, and December 2008.
