Biographical/Historical Note

Historically there has been less scholarship and financial aid money available in state institutions like Georgia Tech as opposed to private postsecondary institutions. Federal financial assistance to public institutions began with the G.I. Bill after World War II, but that assistance was only available to servicemen and servicewomen seeking to further their education after the war. A broader plan was initiated in 1958 with the National Defense Education Act, in which a student loan program became available to all students needing money to attend postsecondary institutions. After the late 1950s, the program at Georgia Tech expanded to include grants, scholarships, and work-study programs. Increasingly, Tech's scholarship and loan programs grew through funding from private industry, business, foundation, and individual support for specific scholarships and grants.

The office overseeing financial aid and scholarships has changed its name several times. From the late 1960s through the late 1980s, the office was called the Financial Aid Office or the Office of Financial Aid. The office changed its name to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for a brief period in the late 1980s. During the 1990s the office was known as the Office of Student Financial Planning and Services. As of this writing (October 2012), it is called the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
