Abstract:This collection contains numerous photographs of students working on computers in the Georgia Tech library, with the assistance of Miriam Drake and Anne Tinker, former head of the Systems Department.

Biographical/Historical Note

Miriam Anna Drake was born in Boston on December 20, 1936, the daughter of Max Frederick and Beatrice Celia (Mitnick) Engleman. She was educated in Boston, completing a B.S. degree at Simmons College in 1958 and a year of post-graduate study at Harvard in 1959-1960. After several years with United Research and Kenyon and Eckhardt in Boston, she received an M.L.S. from Simmons in 1971. The next year she became head of the research unit of the Purdue University Libraries in Lafayette, Indiana, a position she held until 1976. From 1976 to 1984, she served as Assistant Director of Purdue Libraries and Professor of Library Science at Purdue. She was appointed Dean of the Library at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1984 and remained in that position until her retirement in 2001. After her retirement, she became a Professor Emerita at Georgia Tech.

Drake is the recipient of two honorary degrees, from Indiana University (1994) and Simmons College (1997). She has served as a trustee for the Online Computer Library Center (1978-1984), the Corporation for Research and Education Networking (1991-1994), and Simmons College (1991-1994). She is the author of numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals and trade magazines, and she has held offices in professional organizations such as the American Library Association and the Special Libraries Association. In addition, she has received numerous professional awards, including the Alumni Achievement Award from the Simmons College School of Library and Information Science (1985), the University of Pittsburgh Kent Meckler Media Award (1994), and the Special Libraries Association John Cotton Dana Award (2002).

Miriam Drake was married to John Warren Drake from 1960 to 1985. The Drakes had one child, Robert Warren Drake.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains numerous photographs of students working on computers in the Georgia Tech library, with the assistance of Miriam Drake, former Dean of the Georgia Tech Libraries, and Anne Tinker, former head of the Systems Department.

The collection contains 30 color photographs in good condition, along with 35 mm negatives, which accompany the photographs. Negatives are also in good condition.


Arrangement

Series 1 contains photographs dealing with Dean Miriam Drake, Series 2 includes photographs of Anne Tinker, and Series 3 is made up of photographs of unidentified students.
