Biographical/Historical Note

Frank Rivers MacNeill was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 19, 1885. According to the Register of Students (UA351, 1899-1906) he entered the Georgia School of Technology on September 30, 1902 as an apprentice, C class. Frank MacNeill played football for the Georgia School of Technology and was also an early member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

When MacNeill married Mabel Abbott on October 15, 1910, he was affliated with the Cotton Insurance Association. Later, MacNeill worked on the Georgia Power Tallulah Falls dam project in Rabun County, Georgia. Mabel MacNeill also had a job related to the construction of the Tallulah Falls hydroelectric plant--she served as secretary to the chief engineer of the contracting company. The construction project was completed in 1914 and consisted of Tallulah Falls Dam, Tallulah Falls Lake, and a hydroelectric plant that brought additional power to the city of Atlanta.

MacNeill registered for the World War I draft on September 17, 1918; according to his draft card, he was thirty-three years old at the time and living on Lawton Street in Atlanta, Georgia. MacNeill also served on the Georgia Inspection and Rating Bureau in Atlanta, Georgia. He died in Florida on December 02, 1977 at the age of 92.

Description

This series contains images of a country club and golf course identified as Lakemont Country Club. "Lakemont Country Club Atlanta" is written on the back of one of these photos, however, there is no evidence of a Lakemont Country Club in Atlanta during this time period. It may be that these images are actually of a country club at Lakemont, Georgia, in Rabun County near Tallulah Falls, or possibly Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club.

Military, 1911-1916

Description

This series has a variety of images depicting U.S. troops and supplies arriving at a dock and boarding U.S. Army Transport (U.S.A.T.) ships. Based on research, including the fact that the Sumner ran aground in 1916 and was declared a loss, these images probably date between 1911-1916, most likely 1913-1914. It is likely that the location in the photos is the port of Galveston, Texas. The Mexican Revolution was happening at this time and the US sent troops to Mexico and to the Texas-Mexico border.
