Biographical/Historical Note

The Vice President for Student Affairs oversees the Division of Student Affairs on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus. The Vice President is in charge of a variety of offices relating to student personnel services and activities outside of the curriculum, including the Campus Recreation Center, Career Services, Success Programs, the Counseling Center, and the Office of the Dean of Students.

The Vice President for Student Affairs office originated in 1922, when the position of Dean of Men was created. The Dean served as an advisor to the students, in academic, career and personal matters. Floyd Field, a professor of mathematics since 1906 and a longtime advocate of the position, served as the first Dean. Field held the position until his retirement in 1946. Near the end of Field's tenure the position became known as the Dean of Students. Another popular figure on campus, George C. Griffin, held the position from 1946 until his retirement in 1964. James E. Dull, who succeeded Griffin, also was popular among the students and held a lengthy tenure. Dull rose from the ranks, serving first as Assistant Dean of Students from 1957 to 1960, and then Associate Dean from 1960 to 1965. Dull retired in 1991.

In 1985, as responsibilities for student services increased, the Dean of Students was given the title Vice President/Dean of Student Affairs. The Vice President/Dean headed the Division of Student Affairs, and held responsibility for a variety of duties, as overseer of student government, orientation, career services and student organizations. During John Crecine's presidency in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the position title was changed to the Vice President of Student Services. The title returned to Vice President for Student Affairs in about 1995.

After Dull's retirement, Charles C. Schroeder briefly took over as Vice President. Following Schroeder's resignation in May 1992, after only five months in office, Roger E. Wehrle served as interim Vice President for Student Affairs for about three years. Lee Wilcox held the position from 1996 to 2003; William Schafer succeeded Wilcox in about 2004.
