About GKR

Mission

The GKR initiative will advance scholarly communication by expanding the use of institutional repositories (IRs) by more U.S. colleges and universities, by increasing the amount of professionals with knowledge and skills in managing consortial IRs, and by multiplying the impact of USG scholarship. The institutions will benefit from lowering resource barriers to IR implementation consortially, thereby increasing visibility and distribution for their intellectual holdings worldwide.

Goals

The Georgia Institute of Technology and partners, GALILEO, University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Health Sciences University, Georgia Southern University, Valdosta State University, Albany State University, North Georgia College and State University, Kennesaw State University, and College of Coastal Georgia will implement a statewide IR program called the GALILEO Knowledge Repository (GKR) as well as create and implement a nationwide symposium and workshop for establishing statewide and consortial repositories.

Deliverables

  • Conduct a survey and focus groups of the USG faculty’s usage and perceptions of IRs
  • Build a central repository of standardized metadata, featuring the repository collection mapping tool, harvested from eight IRs in the USG
  • Establish a service to host individual IRs for four participating USG institutions (Georgia Health Sciences University, Albany State Univ., College of Coastal Georgia, Georgia Gwinnett College)
  • Establish IR-related services: rights assistance, digitization, content submission, and preservation
  • Develop and implement the Statewide and Consortial Repositories Symposium
