Lauren Nash, a native of Wilkes County, Georgia, joined the 961st Engineer Maintenance Company in 1943. While serving with General Patton's Third Army, Nash saw action throughout France and Belgium. He learned of the existence of Buchenwald during a stay in Weimar, Germany and made a visit to view and photograph the just-liberated camp. Here the Tech Sergeant "saw why we were over there fighting." Nash was employed at an automobile repair shop in the Atlanta area at the time of interview on December 7, 1978.
