OPEN ACCESS AND SCHOLARLY cOMMUNICATION
NEWS:

Resources for Authors

How does the scholarly communication crisis impact authors and what can we do about it? The crisis relates to researchers losing rights to their intellectual freedom to publishers. It also refers to the rising cost to libraries and universities of accessing the journals from these publishers. Authors can consider alternative publishing models as a way to change this cycle.

The Issues:

  • Losing Control of Copyright

When authors sign away copyright to publishers they are forced to ask permission from publishers to post research to the web or to distribute copies.

ACTION: Authors can work with publishers to maintain rights to their research. Learn more about the issue

  • Rising Journals Prices and Shrinking Library Budgets

Due to the rising cost of journals from commercial publishers, libraries are subscribing to fewer journals and purchasing fewer books. Scholars have less access to research materials.

ACTION: Support publishers that offer lower costs and better services. Learn more about the issue
  • Availability of Alternative Publishing Models

Alternative publishing models can help reduce the impact of rising journal costs on research, make publishing faster, provide services for author rights retention and remove physical and virtual barriers to research

ACTION: By creating and supporting alternative publishing models, universities, publishers and authors are helping relieve a major portion of the strain on library budgets. Learn more about the issue
